How to Choose the Right Size Water Softener
Too small and hard water sneaks through. Too big and you pay for capacity you will never use. Here is how sizing actually works.
Why Size Matters
A water softener traps calcium and magnesium on resin beads, then flushes them away during regeneration. A softener's "size" — usually stated in grains, like 32,000 or 48,000 — is how much hardness the resin can hold between regenerations. Sized right, the system regenerates every several days and runs efficiently for years. Sized wrong, you either run out of soft water between regenerations or waste salt and water regenerating far more often than needed.
The Two Numbers That Decide Your Size
Sizing comes down to two measurements:
- Your water's hardness, measured in grains per gallon. This is the big one — and it varies enormously from one well or neighbourhood to the next, which is why guessing is a bad idea.
- Your household's daily water use, which follows the number of people under your roof. A common planning figure is around 75 gallons per person per day.
A Simple Sizing Example
Multiply hardness by daily use and you get the grains of hardness your softener must remove each day. Take a family of four using about 300 gallons a day, with water at 20 grains per gallon: that is 6,000 grains per day, or roughly 42,000 over a week — so a 48,000-grain system gives comfortable headroom. That is an illustration, not a recommendation: your numbers will differ, which is exactly why we test first.
On Well Water? Count the Iron Too
Iron behaves like extra hardness as far as your softener is concerned — each part per million of iron adds to the load the resin must carry, roughly like several extra grains of hardness. A softener sized for hardness alone can fall short on a well with iron in the mix, so iron always belongs in the sizing math.
The Shortcut: Free Water Testing
Nobody sizes a softener correctly from a postal code. Bring a water sample to our Orangeville showroom and we will test hardness and iron free, or book free in-home testing and we will do it at your kitchen tap. Then we size the system to your actual water, your household and your budget.
