Tannin Filtration Systems

Anion-exchange filtration that clears the yellow-brown tint and bitter taste tannins leave in well water.

What Are Tannins?

Tannins are dissolved organic compounds released by decaying leaves, roots and other vegetation. They are common in wells near wooded areas, swamps and lakes, and they turn water yellow to brown — like weak tea — while giving it a bitter, earthy taste. Tannins are not typically a health concern, but they stain fixtures and laundry, and they can foul the resin in a standard water softener, so they need their own dedicated treatment.

How Tannin Filtration Works

Our tannin systems use Purolite A860 anion-exchange resin that captures dissolved tannins as water passes through. The system backwashes and regenerates on a schedule, flushing the collected organics to drain. Because tannin levels vary widely from well to well, we start with a water analysis and size the system — resin volume and valve — to your actual tannin load and household water use, so it performs from day one.
